Executive Order No. 176 – Ordering all State buildings to fly flags at half-staff on Monday, March 23, 2015, in recognition and mourning of a brave and loyal American hero, United States Marine Captain Stanford H. Shaw III. Captain Shaw, a native of Basking Ridge. Captain Shaw graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2006 and accepted a commission as a Marine officer. Captain Shaw was a dedicated and decorated Marine and the recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment ribbon with two stars. Captain Shaw was currently assigned to United States Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Captain Shaw tragically lost his life during a training exercise off the coast of Florida.
“Captain Shaw’s patriotism and dedicated service to his country and his fellow Marines makes it appropriate and fitting for the State of New Jersey to remember him, to mark his passing, and to honor his memory,” said Governor Christie.
